World Cup winner Lothar Matthaus has declared Manchester United Europe's strongest team and also insists Real Madrid's championship victory was a sure sign of how far the Spanish Liga has slipped.

German legend Matthaus says the way Real clinched the Liga title was simply showed how far Spain's top-flight had slipped behind the Premiership and Serie A on the European table.

"Only the final weekend brought a definitive decision," said Matthaus. "It was pure emotion for the fans, but also a clear signal to the international competitors: Spain in no longer the great European power.

"The two great clubs, Real Madrid and Barcelona, showed great inconsistency and went through a lot of highs and lows during the season."

Matthaus believes the Premiership and Serie A are now the superior competitions and rates Manchester United and Inter Milan as Europe's top two clubs.

"The troops of Sir Alex Ferguson dominated the Premiership and next season surely they will win him another Champions League," added the former Inter star. "They have two qualities that no-one can touch - they're a young team and one that is improving all the time."

Matthaus also highlighted United pair Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney as key to their Champions League success.

On Real's title victory, Matthaus told Bild that it was down to two players alone - the former Manchester United stars David Beckham and Ruud van Nistelrooy.

He's right with Inter, but Man U? Nah. If I ever hear another one of you reds talking about Chelsea buying a title, I'll kick ya in the nads.

this guys is an absolute retard!!!!

how has the la liga slipped??? inconsistancies...

spanish 3-4-5-6 teams have a bigger payroll that most leagues !!!!

real has a problem beating atletico because atletico aint a normal number 6 team ...if atletico or valencia or sevilla played in italy or england they would be in the first two three teams..

anyone remember how bad valencia destroyed chelsea in the champions league and they lost by pure luck ....

man u had a lot of good signing in this offseason but they still aint no real madrid no barcelona ..and the la liga is the best !! i told u guys last year also than man u was an extremely lucky team and i told you there was no way in hell they would make it to the finals of the champions league and i was right...

I don't really agree with your reasons but yeah...the Spanish league is by far the strongest league in the world. England got two international top teams; ManU and Liverpool.

Arsenal and Chelsea never done in Europe what they shoulda do with that amount of money. ManU is THE top team in England. There is no dobut possible. Only Liverpool can compete with that.
