Every Sunday, August 12, is a sad day in boxing history, especially so in the small town of Santiago De Tianguistengo, Mexico. It is there that locals gather to remember one of their own. Salvador Sanchez, whose life was cut short in a tragic car accident was honored on the 25th anniversary of his untimley death yesterday- honored by more than 3,000 mourners from near and far.
Among the throng were former foes Juan LaPorte and Wilfredo Gomez. Sanchez' fight against Gomez, who was rising in weight to challenge Sanchez in the "Battle of the Little Giants," was one of boxing first blockbuster promotions among the smaller weight classes- with Sanchez dominating the K.O. artist Gomez for a TKO8 victory and further cementing his legacy. That fight, as well as the rugged W15 over LaPorte also represented the continuing rivalry between Mexicans and Puerto Ricans in the ring. Also among those who gathered to honor one of Mexico's greatest warriors were fellow Mexicans Lupe Pintor, Carlos Zarate and Rafael "Bazooka" Limon. After an emotional church ceremony, the jam-packed church, as well as hundreds standing outside made the journey on foot to Sanchez' grave side.
