I was scowling the depths of my head for a topic to post in here , and remember a couple of my guys and I just we're having this conversation and I was wondering then if it was racist . anyway is it racist to assume that it's a middle eastern person working a tobacco shop / cornerstore ?

I mean we go so far as to do this accent and talk like the people that run the stores around here , I feel a bit bad about doing it at times , but around here anyway it's all people of that decent running these stores .

I don't consider myself a racist person at all , probably the furthest thing from it , what do y'all think ?

I think it is racist, I used to do it but I don't anymore. I fell in love with this Indian girl once, and her accent was a turn on....

anyway, don't do it if you can help it..

i try me best not to mock people..... i also try my best not to judge people.... but crumb its only human to stereotype.... im fairly sure it has something to do with the way our brain works.... so dont stress it....

...if u know that u are a good person who does good things, and u dont discriminate soley because of difference than i would say your not racist.

Sometimes I question how good of a person I truely am , I'm not trying to sound like some after school special but I do some foul things , and I have automatically thrown someone into a category based off appearances , I don't know if y'all have actual African's where you live , like African refugees , not African Americans . but I can't stand it man , the accent they have when they talk drives me fucking bananas , I'm not saying there bad people , and I've never done anything out of order to any of them , I just dont associate with them because of the voice , and alot of the ones around here aren't really up to speed on the whole Hygiene thing . this may just sound like an ignorant rambling , I'm really not trying to offend anyone just saying how I feel .

its society really, ur not the only one krumb

in my own view, i wouldnt discriminate or think differently about someone with a different accent

KRUMB

I mean it bugs the shit out of me that I can be that narrowminded , because I know that they have something positive to offer to society , I just can not stand that accent , it may seem petty , but the part of Minneapolis I live in I'm one of the very few white guys , and I just hear it everywhere I go , and the hygiene thing like I said petty again , but when it is everywhere you go , White Castle , Super America , everywhere is that noise and that smell it gets a bit irritating.

^^well in my view that is racist...but their are many ways around it....

first off meditation is one way u could go about it... i meditate frequently and it helps u appreciate life more.... this could take your negative feelins toward their accent and smell and turn it into a positive.... i mean a bad smell or sound isnt neccassarly a bad thing...

this sounds a bit silly but slowly take in the smell or sound as something interesting rather than something u despise...actually whitness the smell.... and most importantly hold no negative feelins.... see it as if it is something interestin....
i know this sounds disgustin but you may find the smell becomes a object of character....rather than somethiing u ride off as a bad thing.

...this can be applied to anything..... if u see an ugly person instead of cringing, take in wat u are actually seein.... enjoy the view for what it is.

^^no offense taken...but i dont think my age has much to do with it, i think its more the influences that ive encountered....

honestly Buddhism and Hindusim have changed my life.... i have really reduced the ammount of negative judgements i make and simply accept them...

for an example....
....plenty of times noisey ass annoyin cats jump on the same public transport as what i am on.... n instead of bein pissed off at their wild behaviour i simply take note of it... without sayin to myself things like 'damn these these dudes are dickheads'...

when something annoys me i simple turn to consiously experiencing the moment instead of trippin out...

Nah, I don't think it's racist.

I think anyone who does think that's racist is a bit too sensitive.

It's just a generalization to me. And then you turn around and make fun of it.. which is natural.

Life is funny.. you should be able to make fun the random funny parts of it without being called out for any kind of bigotry

I think you just have a somewhat misguided opinion about the subject. Racist in my opinion means your negative attitude allows you to do a diservice to a person's ability to enjoy the basic tenets of life. The ability to pursue, work, shelter, love, education, religion, and family. There maybe other things, but that is being racist.

KRUMB

Thats kind of how I felt about it too , but I figured I may have a bias opinion being as I'm judging myself , It's not in my nature at all to do anything hurtful to any person race , age , regardless I belive I'm a genuinely good person , and like i've said I know they do there thing , and have positive influence on society , shit most of the shops around my place are little African stores , and I ain't going to lie I go in there and cop my 10 pound bag of rice for 3.00$ without any hesitation haha .

king krumb u sound racist to me...ive been thru racism when i was young for about 5 years. and even people who claimed not b racist had negative thoughts like u have for african people. if u dislike someone because of their accent to me thats racism.

One problem I really notice on this board is how people use words improperly. In order to have a clear understanding of issues you first need to understand what words to use and how.

"if u dislike someone because of their accent to me thats racism." You could say that racist, but that would be still wrong. Because he is referring to a dialect. Which is the usage or vocabulary that is characteristic of a specific group of people; what I mean by this is that a group of people living in the same environment can speak exactly the same, ethnic group withstanding. This is why disliking a peerson based on how they speak isn't racist. Just a little ignorant. Because if he met a middle eastern person who spoke more like him. He wouldn't have those feelings about that person.

mayb but i went thru enuff racism in my life.....my so called best friend back in those days said he wasnt a racist but thought most indians smell but because i didnt smell he was my friend. but he defently was a racist in the last year of school he gave me verbal abuse like i never heard before. if someone comments negativly on a group of people despite what colour they are deep inside that person dislikes them for who they are. this is the case, u can have black friends, white friends but u can still b a racist.

I agree, ibarfly.

I can't even count the number of times I have been called racist, seemingly just because i'm white and I said something a little off-color (honestly, no pun intended).

Dax,

To me, everything you said stems from pure ignorance. Most people are more ignorant than they are racist. Racism is not thinking a race smells. Racism is thinking that black people are just inherently less intelligent.

Something along the lines of a white person telling a black person "Wow, you speak so well. You are so articulate." is a little racism mixed with a lot of ignorance. People who say something like that just probably haven't encountered many black people in their life. So they go by stereotypes of those that they've seen on television and the poor sampling they've run across in life.

I'm sure to a black person who is insulted like that, they want to think the person is racist, but coming from somebody who knows a lot of people who have said/thought things just like that.. it's really ignorance.

I agree that there is a very fine line between racism and ignorance, but the things you listed are purely ignorance.

i dont think its really racist if you just jokin around... and its obvious you dont think that all people of that race own these stores and nobody else they may just be the majority. once you take it into degrading them and looking at it in a negative way its racist to me. its like when sumone asks you to do an impression of something you just do the obvious voice, and yeah its stereotypical n generalising but you cant take everything so seriously when it comes to joking around... its like when people are asked to talk like a rapper they immediately go "yo yo yo yo wassup yo" n shit like that n its kinda fucked up but you just gott laugh at it when you know they are only being stereotypical to joke around

SilkyJohnsonn

yeah ignorance is the major problem fueling racism these days in my view... but its what racist shit people are bein fed with that keep people ignorant. its like people dont think they are racist coz they dont go up to sumone of a different race n call em a name...but then that same person might see a group of that other race walkin passed in the street and immediately think they are up to no good... and they would still say they have nothing against that race of people. Racism is just so underground now like behind the scenes... like who you think gonna get the office job off a resume when one says Abdi Muhammad and one says Johnny McWhite and they have equally qualified resumes....or is it also racist that most people would automatically think that the boss hiring is going to be a white man...like sumone named abdi muhammad couldnt be that boss....you would say no that aint right but you probably thought that automatically coz of the way the world is... it just seems to me that white is always looked at as the norm and the differences are looked more at black being different to white...rather than white being different to black..or wateva race.

this one time in school we were in an english class having to read about some bullshit play and i started reading these little profiles of each character. Each one was like ...female, middle aged, does this n that bla bla bla.. so then i got to another one ad it goes... likes this, does that, is a black female..... n i was like umm wtf? no other characters mentioned they were white or anything and the same thing happened when i found another character they said was black... so this is just in a regular ass class n nobody else thought hat was fucked up until i said anything about it...like it was just normal for them to just hear that they were black like it needs to be noted like they are "different"...like white human is just a human and a black human is noted they are a black human and not just a human too....

and im white so it wasnt like i just thought it was fucked up coz i was black myself, it was just plain fucked up. so thats why i hate when oprah or someone says "what has hip hop done for racial relations?" when if i wasnt into hip hop i prob would have been like every other sucker in that room...

but yeah i think maybe people help there ignorance by not trying to listen to other views on shit...they just watch the media..n listen to there racist grand daddy n watch them cop shows where every episode its another story bout a black male killing some one and its bullshit...............anyway i doubt nobody will be reading all this shit i just wrote hahaha but maybe one so thats god enough for me im out.

once you take it into degrading them and looking at it in a negative way its racist to me.

Not racist, that's prejudice. Racist has to be based on the fact the person in question is ethnic. But if you are commenting on a attribute that you would with any other ethnic group then it is a prejudice based on that issue. hence a south drawl, or something of the same vein.

By using the term racist incorrectly you dilute the true definition of the word. First think about how you are using it. It doesn't come into play anytime a person of one race offends another race.

do you think publicly speaking that its right to call a white South African who has been granted US Citizenship an American?? or would you for that matter call him/her an African American??

just a thought
