TORONTO, Ont. -- A 16-year-old girl has died after allegedly being choked by her father over a dispute with her family over her refusal to wear the hijab, the Islamic headscarf worn by some Muslim women.

Peel Regional Police arrested a 57-year-old man Tuesday morning after receiving a 911 call from a suburban home in Mississauga from a man saying he had killed his daughter, according to a Toronto newspaper Web site.

According to the National Post, a Toronto newspaper Web site, when police arrived at the house they found the teen on the floor without any vital signs.

Constable J.P. Valade, a spokesman for Peel police, would not release the names of either the victim or the man arrested and would not give any details about what transpired inside the home.

“We are not getting into the details of her injuries at this time,” he told the newspaper. “We aren’t getting into any details about this case. This investigation is really in its infancy. Officers are still canvassing the neighborhood and talking to family members.”

Friends of the teenager identified her as Aqsa Parvez and said they were shocked by her death but said her family was very strict.

“She got threatened by her father and her brother,” Dominiquia Holmes-Thompson told the newsaper. “He said that if she leaves, he would kill her.”

Another friend said she had previous fights with her father over wearing Islamic dress and wearing her hijaab all of the time.

Police confirmed there were other family members home when the teen died.

Can somebody explain the importance of the Hijab? I just am wondering what the importance of it is. Shame a 16 year old had her life end over this.

It's all over the news up here (obviously......). Mississaugua is about 30 minutes drive from where I live so it's pretty much a HUGE news story that's spreading all over the city. Way too much is being made about Hijab and Islam instead of the fact that her father (and brother) are just complete psychos. The media is using this as another launch pad to attack the Muslim religion (what else is new?).

To sum it up, teenage Muslim girls have been having this sort of dispute with their parents for decades (maybe more) regarding wearing Hijab.
Hijab is the scarf that covers a Muslim woman's hair, not to be confused with Niqab which is like a veil that covers the face. In Islam it's not written in stone that a Muslim woman wear Hijab but it does suggest strongly that Hijab is to be worn for deceny. Muslim traditional parents insist wearing Hijab is a law and must be followed strictly, while more 'loose' parents let their child decide whether or not she wants to wear Hijab. It's kind of like parents that don't wanna see their little girls going outside in a mini-skirt and would rather they cover themselves from head to toe....

I have several Muslim female friends, some of them choose to wear Hijab because they find it the best way to preserve their beauty (only their husband is allowed to see her uncovered, which helps to keep that bond sacred).
Others have chosen not to wear it because they don't feel as if Hijab is comfortable or that important to maintain their beauty. In the end, it's up to the woman to decide........

The media is gonna spin this into another case of 'Not Without My Daughter' (for those who saw the movie, you know what I'm talkin bout)......*sigh*.

Sad to hear that happened first off. If the media can relate Islam and crime

together, its gonna make news. You are not gonna hear about a Jewish father choking out a kid over not wearing his yamaka(sp?) or a some Christian parent punching a kid because he they didnt wear his cross. Islam continues to be scrutnized and what are you gonna do about it? nothing and it sux.

I did not think they were attacking islam. I think anybody with a brain can see if happening with a christian father and his girl wants to wear lipstick and the father and son go ape shit. At least that is how I saw it.

It is sad anytime life is loss. Thanks for dropping some knowledge on a brotha. I appreciate that.

i shake my head......how can u kill your child over a head scarf? it is wise to wear a head scarf but thats up2 the women......this bothers me cuz they r goooing to blame the religion now........just like what happend in sudan has nothing to do with the religion.......and it sucks that muslims are giving the religion a bad name

if anyone doesnt know muslims and islam isn the same thing......islam is a way of like while a muslim is a individual he chooses to submi himself to god.....bad muslims are just bad muslims and has nothing to do with islam

Basically

it's alway hard to bring your children up in a different culture than the one you're used to.

Arguments about every day, especially when they hit puperty....

But still i can't see anybody killing his own blood.
