Woodgate wins Carling Cup for Tottenham in extra time
London, England (Sports Network) - Jonathan Woodgate's header in extra time allowed Tottenham to overcome Chelsea, 2-1 in the Carling Cup final at Wembley Stadium on Sunday.
Didier Drogba gave Chelsea the lead in the 39th minute but Dimitar Berbatov's penalty kick with 20 minutes to play forced extra time for Tottenham. Woodgate then scored four minutes into the extra session and Spurs hung on to lift their first trophy since 1999.
Tottenham controlled play in the first half and was unlucky not to go in front when Aaron Lennon's corner was headed off the crossbar by Pascal Chimbonda.
Despite being outplayed for most of the half, it was Chelsea who went in front six minutes before the break. Drogba sent a free kick over the Tottenham wall and Spurs keeper Paul Robinson was left standing as the ball hit the back of the net.
The Blues began to look better after the restart but they gave a goal back to Tottenham in the 70th minute when defender Wayne Bridge was called for a handball inside his own area.
Berbatov then sent Chelsea keeper Petr Cech the wrong from the spot, and the Blues were very lucky not to concede again in regulation thanks to some great goalkeeping by Cech.
It took Spurs just four minutes into extra time to grab the winner as Jermaine Jenas sent a free kick into the box and Woodgate got his head to the ball, turning it on goal. Cech made the initial stop but the ball hit off of his gloves and bounced off the head of Woodgate, pushing the ball across the line.
Chelsea went on the attack for the remainder of the match but their best chance came from the foot of substitute Salomon Kalou, whose effort was turned away by Robinson to preserve the win.
