All posts pertaining to the Virtual Stock Game go here.
You get to start off the game with $100,000 and you can play the stock market anyway you like. There is usually a 20 minute drag of the virtual stock market off the real market. (Note: You can't take advantage of this discrepancy. So if a stock goes up $100 within a second, you can't put in a market order to buy the stock at current price to take advantage of the $100 price rise in 20 minutes).

What do you mean?
You can't figure out how to trade stocks or you don't know which stocks to buy?

At Rah - Yes this game uses numbers from real current stock exchanges. Not every single exchange around the world is in the simulation I would assume, but every single stock I've been interested in thus far is available for trade on the simulation.
At Rade: I'm not sure what you wanted me to observe but I looked into the stock. If you look at federal policy, in the Bush years we had an administration quite opposed to federal funding for stem cell research.
2001–2006 - U.S. President George W. Bush signs an executive order which restricts federally-funded stem cell research on embryonic stem cells to the already derived cell lines. He supports federal funding for embryonic stem cell research on the already existing lines of approximately $100 million and $250 million for research on adult and animal stem cells.
19 July 2006 - President George W. Bush vetoes House Resolution 810 Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act, a bill that would have reversed the Dickey Amendment which made it illegal for federal money to be used for research where stem cells are derived from the destruction of an embryo.
So if we look through the trends of STEM for say the past 5 years we see that the stock price has been gradually and slowly declining. One thing interesting about this stock is that its been very stable throughout this recession which "officially" started in December 2007. So it seems like science, biotechnology, etc... stocks are not as volatile as the ones me and you were looking at.
Now if you look at it over 1 year there was a huge spike in the stock price starting late October towards middle November 2008 where it more than doubled. This is no doubt because this country was anticipating an Obama victory. Since he's a "liberal", he was bound to loosen up on restrictions for the legalities and funding stem cell research.
The stock ultimately dropped again, possibly because stem cell research didn't seem that high up on the agenda, I don't know...
23 January 2009 - The FDA approves clinical trials for human embryonic stem cell therapy
In the middle to end of January we see a spike in the stock price again.
And most recently Obama lifted Bush's Restrictions on Stem Cell Research where he announced he would issue an executive order to advance the research. So the stock closed at Friday 03/06 at 1.40 and Monday it opened at 2.20 so we saw a huge spike.
Now the stock is sitting at 1.70, a good explanation for this is that rhetoric from the government drove the price up to insanely high levels but action hasn't taken place yet so investors aren't as excited. When actual news of federal action happens to advance stem cell research we'll probably see another rally.

Here's an AIM conversation I had with T-Rade:
elcoun7 (6:48:39 PM): aight so ill break down the stock game
thsaihtam (6:48:42 PM): cool
elcoun7 (6:49:03 PM): basically stocks trade on different exchanges, biggest one is the NY stock exchange, then theres the nasdaq, munich, etc...
elcoun7 (6:49:17 PM): but for the game, and with a real stock account you can pretty much trade stocks on any exchange
elcoun7 (6:49:38 PM): so to trade a stock just go to "make a trade" at the left
thsaihtam (6:49:51 PM): yea
elcoun7 (6:49:56 PM): u logged in?
thsaihtam (6:49:59 PM): yea
elcoun7 (6:50:06 PM): aight type in "goog"
elcoun7 (6:50:09 PM): thats google
thsaihtam (6:50:52 PM): yea
elcoun7 (6:51:00 PM): aight under order type theres buy, sell, etc...
elcoun7 (6:51:03 PM): so buying and selling is easy
elcoun7 (6:51:12 PM): you just type in number of shares you want
elcoun7 (6:51:32 PM): times that by the share price and thats the total cost + $9.95 commission for your fake broker
thsaihtam (6:52:19 PM): where do I see the share price?
elcoun7 (6:52:26 PM): under term theres day order and GTC, day order obviously means ur order expires at the end of the day, Good to cancelled is obvious
elcoun7 (6:52:34 PM): share price is at the top right where it says "last"
thsaihtam (6:52:38 PM): oh
elcoun7 (6:52:42 PM): 308.57 on my screen
thsaihtam (6:52:49 PM): mine too
thsaihtam (6:53:07 PM): how many should I buy?
elcoun7 (6:53:17 PM): nah dont buy anything yet im just explaining how shit works
thsaihtam (6:53:22 PM): oh
elcoun7 (6:53:26 PM): then theres pricing type
elcoun7 (6:53:37 PM): actually back to day order
elcoun7 (6:54:05 PM): the real world stock exchange operates from 9:30AM - 4:00PM EST
elcoun7 (6:54:12 PM): so that time period is the day
thsaihtam (6:54:37 PM): aight, that's like 3:30PM - 10PM
elcoun7 (6:54:40 PM): k
elcoun7 (6:54:51 PM): for pricing type, market order is easy
elcoun7 (6:55:06 PM): you just buy or sell your stock for whatever the stock is trading at the market right now
elcoun7 (6:55:20 PM): so market price for google would be 308.57
elcoun7 (6:56:08 PM): now the thing is, the market price may change a little bit from when you place your order till the time your order executes, I'd say anywhere from 0-15 minutes
elcoun7 (6:56:30 PM): so lets say u put an order in, you may actually buy google at 310 or 306 instead
elcoun7 (6:56:33 PM): usually isnt a big deal
elcoun7 (6:56:47 PM): wit me so far?
thsaihtam (6:56:52 PM): yea
elcoun7 (6:57:08 PM): aight then there's stop order (which i dont really use) so ill skip that for now
elcoun7 (6:57:12 PM): so last one is limit order
elcoun7 (6:57:27 PM): limit order is basically a limit on what you are willing to pay for the stock
elcoun7 (6:57:38 PM): so google is at 308.57 but u dont wanna pay that much
elcoun7 (6:58:05 PM): so you make a buy order but instead of a market order using the market price, you do a limit order using a price you choose
elcoun7 (6:58:15 PM): so lets say u only wanna buy google stock if its 300 or below
elcoun7 (6:58:19 PM): you put in 300 for limit price
thsaihtam (6:59:01 PM): makes sense
elcoun7 (6:59:12 PM): same thing for sell, lets say u own google and bought it at $300, but its only at 308.57, u wanna make more profit so you sell with a limit order at $320, that means ur order will not execute unless the stock reaches at least $320
thsaihtam (6:59:38 PM): if I do that, does it automatically sell at 320 then?
elcoun7 (6:59:44 PM): sort of
elcoun7 (7:00:00 PM): lets say it hits $320, your order may take some time to execute, if it reaches $325 you might get lucky and have ur order execute for $325
elcoun7 (7:00:08 PM): but your order wont go thru for say, $319
thsaihtam (7:00:23 PM): ok
elcoun7 (7:00:40 PM): ill just explain stop order so u know what it is, but i dont think ppl use it that much
elcoun7 (7:01:13 PM): lets say you think google might jump in stock price like crazy but ur not sure so u dont wanna buy it yet
elcoun7 (7:01:34 PM): so you put in a stop order for $315, so once google hits $315 you buy it
elcoun7 (7:01:49 PM): the reason for a stop order is cuz once it shoots up past $315, it could potentially go up to $400
thsaihtam (7:02:18 PM): so it will buy it once it has risen to a certain price that you say
elcoun7 (7:02:24 PM): yea
thsaihtam (7:02:29 PM): cool
elcoun7 (7:02:34 PM): same thing for sell, you think google might go down but ur not sure, so u do a stop order for $300, once stock dips below 300 you sell (so if the stock hits $200 you lose $8 instead of $108)
elcoun7 (7:02:58 PM): so stops can be useful as u can see but i dont think ppl use em alot
thsaihtam (7:03:27 PM): aight
elcoun7 (7:03:34 PM): sidenote: day order expires everything so if you do a limit order or stop order, you gotta be aware if you do day order or good to cancelled
thsaihtam (7:03:36 PM): how do I find good stocks?
elcoun7 (7:03:47 PM): still 1 more thing i gotta explain quick
thsaihtam (7:03:51 PM): ok
elcoun7 (7:04:03 PM): okay we're like 90% done w/ how to trade stocks
elcoun7 (7:04:09 PM): under order type: theres sell short and buy to cover
elcoun7 (7:04:14 PM): right?
thsaihtam (7:04:29 PM): right
elcoun7 (7:04:31 PM): alotta people dont know that u can make money when the stock market is completely fucked
elcoun7 (7:04:47 PM): so lets say you are 99% sure google stock is gonna fall to $200
elcoun7 (7:04:52 PM): obviously u dont wanna own it
elcoun7 (7:04:56 PM): what u can do is sell it short
elcoun7 (7:05:08 PM): so you sell google short for its market price of 308.57
elcoun7 (7:05:22 PM): then lets say a month later google drops to $200 as you predict
elcoun7 (7:05:36 PM): then you make a buy to cover order where you buy all the google stock you sold at $200
elcoun7 (7:05:41 PM): and you make the 108.57 profit
elcoun7 (7:05:56 PM): short selling is tricky because when you sell short, ur not selling stocks that you own
elcoun7 (7:06:05 PM): thats why you always have to buy to cover
elcoun7 (7:06:10 PM): at some point in the futur
elcoun7 (7:06:46 PM): now lets say google jumps to 400, obviously u made a shitty prediction so ur going to lose that 400 - 308.57 loss
elcoun7 (7:06:54 PM): whereas if u bought the stock instead u woulda made money
thsaihtam (7:07:07 PM): aight, I think I won't do that :P
elcoun7 (7:07:18 PM): it can be tempting specially when the markets in a decline
thsaihtam (7:07:31 PM): sounded confusing to me :P
elcoun7 (7:07:32 PM): like if u shorted any U.S. bank in october and bought back today u woulda made $$$$$$$$$$
elcoun7 (7:07:41 PM): citibank was like $50 in october
elcoun7 (7:07:43 PM): its $1 now
thsaihtam (7:07:47 PM): wow
elcoun7 (7:07:54 PM): so within 5 or 6 months woulda made 50 times ur investment
elcoun7 (7:08:02 PM): so shortselling is great when times are shitty
thsaihtam (7:08:04 PM): yea, that's sick
elcoun7 (7:08:06 PM): just gotta make the right call
elcoun7 (7:08:19 PM): okay so thats basically 101 for stock trading
elcoun7 (7:08:22 PM): one last sidenote:
elcoun7 (7:08:48 PM): 308.57 is closing price for google yesterday at 4PM EST
elcoun7 (7:09:02 PM): when stock exchange opens monday morning at 9:30AM it wont be 308.57
elcoun7 (7:09:04 PM): it can be anything
elcoun7 (7:09:09 PM): so keep that in mind because i didnt know that
thsaihtam (7:09:28 PM): okay.. that sucks if it has fallen like crazy and you have stocks in it...
elcoun7 (7:09:33 PM): yeah basically
elcoun7 (7:09:43 PM): cuz lets say u put a sell order in, its gonna execute at the price it opens at
thsaihtam (7:10:02 PM): damn, sounds like a possible major loss
elcoun7 (7:10:11 PM): yeah it can suck, but usually it wont be a big change
thsaihtam (7:10:27 PM): it can ofcourse also work in your favor
elcoun7 (7:10:32 PM): yeah definitely
thsaihtam (7:10:37 PM): now, how I find the right stock to buy?
elcoun7 (7:10:42 PM): right
elcoun7 (7:10:51 PM): well obviously u gotta keep up with financial news to know whats going on
elcoun7 (7:11:05 PM): obviously i cant give you an answer because if i could i'd be rich
thsaihtam (7:11:16 PM): I don't and have no intentions of starting :P
elcoun7 (7:11:34 PM): lol then honestly playing this game is kinda useless and just for fun for you
thsaihtam (7:11:59 PM): totally, I thought we did this to have fun, I didn't think it was this realistic tbh
thsaihtam (7:12:10 PM): well, ofcourse we all do it for fun
elcoun7 (7:12:15 PM): yeah for sure
elcoun7 (7:12:21 PM): im taking it kinda serious just cuz im a finance major
elcoun7 (7:12:26 PM): but its all shits and giggles
thsaihtam (7:12:46 PM): so I should just different companies and such
elcoun7 (7:13:02 PM): yeah basically, shit takes mad time and can be stressful
elcoun7 (7:13:02 PM): ill just tell you my strategy
elcoun7 (7:13:23 PM): basically our U.S. dollar is fucked (i think) so that means gold will rise relative to our weak dollar
elcoun7 (7:13:33 PM): so if u look at my profile you see i own 2 gold mining stocks right now
thsaihtam (7:13:38 PM): aight
elcoun7 (7:13:41 PM): they both went up since i bought 'em
thsaihtam (7:13:41 PM): makes sense
elcoun7 (7:13:44 PM): also
thsaihtam (7:14:09 PM): can you invest in curencies?
elcoun7 (7:14:26 PM): on this simulation, i dont believe you can
elcoun7 (7:14:27 PM): but...
elcoun7 (7:15:03 PM): there are ETF's that track currencies so if u invest in the ETF that buys the currency u think will get stronger you'll make money
elcoun7 (7:15:16 PM): uhh just google what an ETF is if ur interested
thsaihtam (7:15:30 PM): wow
thsaihtam (7:15:41 PM): I'll just invest in Big companies I know
elcoun7 (7:15:45 PM): lol...
elcoun7 (7:15:48 PM): because of the recession oil prices done got beaten really low cuz people cant afford to use fossil fuels as much etc...eventually though oil is going to turn around and get more expensive, its insanely cheap right now
elcoun7 (7:15:55 PM): so i plan on investing in some oil companies soon
thsaihtam (7:16:07 PM): all right
elcoun7 (7:16:09 PM): my last strategy is short selling banks
elcoun7 (7:16:26 PM): these banks aint worth shit so they're gonna keep getting lower until our government finalizes a plan to bail them out
elcoun7 (7:16:38 PM): but eventually once government finalizes a plan i think there will be a big rebound
elcoun7 (7:16:49 PM): so ill try to buy bank stocks when i think the rebound is happening
thsaihtam (7:17:10 PM): wow.. this is almost too confusing for me
elcoun7 (7:17:16 PM): lol yeah it can be hectic
elcoun7 (7:17:21 PM): honestly just have fun
elcoun7 (7:17:31 PM): make alotta trades
elcoun7 (7:17:37 PM): even if u lose money or make money you'll learn shit along the way
elcoun7 (7:17:53 PM): and u can always check other ppls profiles to see what they have been doing

Since you don't really give a fuck about stocks anyway, take some risky financial advice from me right now.
Sell everything you have except for AUY right now. Then use half of your funds to buy SKF and the other half to buy FAZ. I'll tell you when to sell.
Basically I'm betting on financials going down after the rally yesterday and the quick rally we had for the first half of today.
P.S. I hope you read my memo on STEM from the previous page lol. I spent like 20 minutes looking it up and writing that.
P.P.S. On the bright side your portfolio is looking better than vamp's =]

I think in the long run gold will still be a very wise investment, but because of the fake rallies we are having, and the debates over economic stimulus, the dollar is keeping relatively strong.
My gold stocks haven't been making major moves but pretty soon they will be.
Oil is soon to rise too, but then again it's all about market timing.
It also looks like I was wrong about the rally, it seems to have more momentum than I thought so I lost some money today. Perhaps the rally push the Dow into the 8500 range before it comes back down again.

Damn Salman you're never on AIM.
Anyways on my real account, everytime I make a sale I have to wait for the funds to settle even after the trade executes.
I sold a stock the other day and I have to wait five days before I can use that money to buy a stock again. It can be frustrating.
Do you face the same problem?
And are there ways to get around it (ie. higher commissions etc...)?

Damn Salman you're never on AIM.
Anyways on my real account, everytime I make a sale I have to wait for the funds to settle even after the trade executes.
I sold a stock the other day and I have to wait five days before I can use that money to buy a stock again. It can be frustrating.
Do you face the same problem?
And are there ways to get around it (ie. higher commissions etc...)?
yo El......i msged u with my other sn....im me when u get a chance cuz its not good to make that many transaction....cuz for short term profits you end up paying 30% tax or someshit....and also commission for each trade and all sorts of bullshit which takes away all ur profits....just im me and ill tell u what i mean.

Shoutouts to our newest member Sosa! 16 trades in one day Goddamn! And once again, another shoutout to mrmag, also trading pretty actively as of late.
AIG tanked this week, I bought in earlier this week thinking it would rally early and lost money, but it looks like this morning is where it hit the low, it had a day low of 8.22 and a day high of 12.44, a 51% disparity. So that's where my 31% came from.
I sold it off in my real account, didn't want to hold such a volatile stock over the weekend, unfortunately I got in too late and sold off too early but still made a pretty penny.
Unfortunately 14 of our members are inactive, I've decided to include the ones who have made trades in the past rather than solely the ones who signed up and never traded. Start trading or suffer public humiliation!

I raked in some returns again on AIG, volume was heavy, it looks like the short squeeze is over, the stock price hovered above $14 for the remainder of the day after the morning squeeze.
There was a penny stock that had a 62% increase today, I won't disclose the name but it is a shame I didn't look into it as early as I planned to.

Shoutouts to Salman, recently started making trades again after a long hiatus. And shoutouts to Tom, who's been trading very actively.
I had a good return off of Citi which rose a solid 10%. The conversion of preferred to common shares was 2 days ago which essentially killed the arbitrage but it looks like the rebound didn't take place immediately. Volume was over 1 billion today with a 10 day average of 340 million.
Been kinda busy so I haven't been trading much, a certain stock did get cheap today, if it says that way tomorrow morning I'll be buying into something.
I'm not the only one with a pretty return as mrmag made back some money on CPF which jumped 7%, I have no idea why since the banks were down today and no news came out. Earnings are on Friday though so maybe investors are optimistic, but based off the sentiment I've been reading it looks like the next piece of shit bank to fail.

Great day for me today even though I unwound some of my position in Citi. I decided to hop in Hecla (probably my favorite company) because earnings announcements for Q2 was today and I expected it to pop on earnings since much of its debt has been resolved and it suffered a drop 2 days ago. But it looks like the stock price is reflecting the price of silver more than the company structure, operations, and business model. It may suffer in the short term but I think it'll break $3 soon enough.
As far as Citi goes, we've had another huge day with an 8.42% gain. I watched the market really close today since I have an actual open position, I expect the run-up to last a bit longer. Another day with over 1 billion volume. We had resistance at 3.10 and tested it 3 times but it looks like we broke it at the end of the day and had blocks at over 3.20
mrmag had a whopping 54% return on his piece of shit bank, looks like your stock rallied hard again and you decided to get out while you could. It's interesting that it rallied so strong without any news surfacing, even the investors are kind of stumped right now. Apparently the company was thinking about a public offering to raise capital that would dilute the shareholder's wealth but it looks like that idea may have fell through, so the stock price has recovered. That's one possible reasoning, the other may be from a possible short squeeze, earnings announcement is soon but I highly doubt anybody is expecting good earnings. I think it'll rise tomorrow but I can't knock you for getting out (at a good price too).
Tom closed out 3 of his losing positions, looks like he stole a stock pick from Sosa lol (BPAX). I've also noticed that alot of the actives like therapeutics, pharmaceutical, biotech, etc... stocks.
Sosa the secret hedge fund manager manages to finish the day positive even as the Dow is red. Salman's been selling off some of his previous gains and opened up some new positions, dude stays well diversified.

Looks like a quiet day from everybody, The only trade made was a purchase of ABT from Tom. The Dow was green, Some speculate that the Dow may hit 10,000 this year which I think is possible in the short term.
Citi still traded over 1 billion in volume although it took a hit after a morning rally. Some saw it and exited their positions, I'm kind of disappointed I didn't to an extent but I don't see this dropping under $3 for at least a little while.

Dow stayed Green today, and July turned out to be a good month for stocks with the Dow up 8.58% from June 30th.
The dollar was weak today and silver made a hefty gain, my current silver pick which I adore operates somewhat like a leveraged ETF. Citigroup shorters seemed to really want to drive down the stock price and met resistance at $3.00 several times, it looks like late afternoon heavy buying volume was able to drive it back up to where it belonged. Volume was once again over 1 billion.
It looks like the funding for the Cash for Clunkers program helped Ford rally big time, so once again Sosa manages to stay ahead of me while making a commodity pick. mrmag tries a buy and sell and Tom continues diversifying into Blue Chips.

The Dow once again had a great day, we might see 10,000 before the Third Quarter is over although I highly doubt that we will be able to sustain that level.
The dollar was once again weak today and silver made a gigantic gain, although my silver pick didn't react too strongly to the jump in the price of silver which is odd because as I mentioned it operates like a leveraged ETF. It isn't all that off though because during the June 1 Silver high of 15.78 Hecla reached a high of 3.89 and it's currently near 3.30 while Silver is a little over 14.
Citigroup finally had its first day where volume was under a billion which tells me the frenzy may be over with the hype concerning arbitrage. However, support was really strong at around 3.18 although we had a day low of 3.14.
mrmag had a really pretty gain after he shorted TSPT after it skyrocketed on news broke that the company would receive millions from a license and collaboration agreement. Stocks that skyrocket at times rally too heavy and meet resistance and gets beaten back down making the targets for shorters. Nice play, although I am curious, how'd you find this stock? I imagine you have an alert from some site that notifies you of the biggest price movers in the market? mrmag also went for a short position on PCAP after the stock had a 100% gain after news that it was subject to a buyout.
Ford continued to rally for Sosa and Salman sold his position in SUN for a small profit.

Silver was strong again today so my pick rallied, Citigroup managed to stay up, a friend has told me that all the arbitrage is over and the company is trading on fundamentals so you may see me dump the stock tomorrow. Volume was stronger than yesterday but short of 1 billion.
Salman had a great pick in YRCW that rallied hard during the day, seems like a lucky pick based on the timing of the buy and the positive news surfacing but maybe he'd care to hop in to explain his pick.
mrmag got hammered on his self-proclaimed strategy of swing trading. The great thing about these stocks is that it is very possible to capture enormous profits but market timing is a bitch. Looks like GGC fooled him twice today. Once again not to get preachy but I like seeing that with the people on this forum in the game: 1) Trying different strategies (like swing trading) and 2) Realizing the potential risk for every trade you make. I'm sure my man mag will come back though.

Hahahah El most of the stocks im picking are the ones in my REAL portfolio....and frankly most of these stocks are based on past ups and downs......YRCW is a trucking company which is doing terrible at the moment and the union is suppose to vote on the paycut to lessen the burden on the loses.....the vote will be out on a week or so....this stock is rallying because the union took a paycut before and now most people are anticipating it again....in my opinion if it goes thru this stock will be above $5 and if the vote is NO....then watch this thing tank....but in this virtual game im doing pretty good so its ok if i risk some money on this one.
RDN I dumped today in VSE but in my real portfolio I kept it for tomorrow....the earning report on that company will be out tomorrow at 10 am.....and im hoping it will rally a bit before the earnings.....theres a similar company (MTG) which even with losses went up 100% after the earnings so im hoping it will be the same with this one....other than that im doing good with BPOP in my real portfolio along with CBI which im up 125%......IRE is up 245% for me.....im doing good for the past 2 weeks or so.....The economy is crap and recently I learned the fact anyone who dives into the stock market for the long term is making a big mistake......if lehman can go bankrupt and AIG, FNM and FRE can be nationalized...then anything is possible....i learned a lot from my mistake of the past 1 1/2 yrs....and now finallly im making some good money!
GOOD LUCK TO ALL!

You're right and this is what I've made my money on since I've never held a stock for over a month but it comes with a lot of risk which is obvious, market timing is very difficult and can be very frustrating, technical analysis can be very time consuming, you must keep up with financial news for every company you're following and it's very hard to do due diligence when you are trading short term.

Reason I'm down 33% is cause the markets have been really volatile last 2 weeks, especially for the 3 stocks I generally trade in my actual account. I've also been insanely busy with midterms so I neglected to login and the result was I held AIG for a long time while it was plummeting. Whatever though I'm back into my safety stock so let's see where we go.

Well my company popped on spazztastic earnings and the more than 60 cent surge in the spot price of silver didn't hurt either. Hecla's up 18% for the day and I'm damn near 100% leveraged so I'll take the handsome gain ;]

Another Nice Day of Gains. I think the Dow has more or less peaked though. I don't think we will see 11,000 for maybe even a year.
